I saw an advertisement in Fortune (or was it Time) magazine by Chevron. For the ignorant Malaysians, Chevron is a large oil company in the US.
Chevron has created the game Energyville to educate the public about energy and what not. Most probably in response to the public’s unease towards petrol being a not-so-green energy.

Energyville is similar to Sim City. You’re in charge of a city. You need to power it with various forms of energy. The game list the pro & cons, the developement, the future of each type of energy e.g. biomass, nuclear, petrol, solar, wind, etc… But keep in mind that this ‘green energy’ game is created by an oil company. Read the ‘facts‘ with a pinch a salt. Some are simply ridiculous facts that even n00bs (e.g. Choon Meng, other typical Malaysians) would laugh at it.
I can’t move on to the next level without putting in petrol because planes and ground vehicles will still depend heavily on petrol. Cheh!
I applaud Chevron’s effort to educate the public about energy issues. Hopefully Malaysians (being katak di bawah tempurung & super n00b about all kinds world/national issues) can learn a thing a two out of this game. I only wish my friends can do just a little more to be more ‘green’, like refusing plastic bag when buying only 1-2 items.
In any case, culture-buzz.com have noted that…
[……]the company doesn’t seem to be trying to inform Internet users about ecological concerns as much as it seems to want people to be aware of how difficult it is to provide energy to a city.
What can I say… it’s an American oil company afterall.
Links and other opinions here and there and here.
To greener future and beyond,

P.S. There’s also a video of the game… X^D
Engaging with the public is never a bad thing. Energy politics aside, the game is a good bit of communications from a usually stodgy industry. Good post!
Human will still rely on oil, gas and coals for the 20-30 years to come…..
Eh, Hong Keat…
Talk so much, got play the game or not? =P
